(on the road) keeping the backseat drivers happy

we have some long hours to spend in the car this summer...
as (i'm sure) most of you do.

this particular road trip will include:
a 10 year old
a 9 year old
a 6 year old
a 4 year old
a 2 year old
a 10 month old

so, i wanted to be prepared with some snacks (and individual trash bags)
and a little something for them to do.

here's what i put together....

i used:
clear hinged containers from orson gygi
white cardstock
letters to make the kids names from magazine clippings
a capri sun
fruit mentos
a bag of chips
cheese and crackers
color wonder activity
a gallon sized ziplock (for trash)

here are a few other ideas i found around the web.

  1. Wow! That's a car load of fun! Great snack ideas!

  2. This is an amazing post! I love all of the ideas.

  3. Oh I LOVE the eye spy game boards!! We're taking a trip next month, and those will be perfect to keep my little ones occupied...At least for a few minutes! And the munchie boxes? Love them! Something like that will surely beat constantly having to dig through a big bag or cooler for snacks. Thanks for sharing!

  4. What a great idea! I'll be taking a road trip with friends and their kids next month, so I've been on the lookout for some goodies to share.

  5. These are such fabulous ideas. I would even venture to travel more with my kiddos in the car (we have 5 also)if these treats would keep them from annoying eachother.

  6. Great idea! I really like the way you put it all together!

  7. What awesome ideas! Thank you for this!

  9. We leave early Saturday morning for our first ever long distance drive with all three kiddos. I've been meaning to get on & search for some things for the car and you just happened to post this today, score! Love all the ideas! Bookmarking for my planning this week!

  10. This could not have come at a better time! Seriously! Heading to your hometown from Idaho in 7 days and this will keep the kiddos occupied ;o) Thanks so much for sharing! I love to read your blog and you are my inspiration for great gifts!

  12. We did a 2day drive this past Christmas and have another planned for is summer. My 2 kids are younger at 5and 3 and obviously are still in car seats but those ziploc/glad little containers for sauces etc are the perfect size for their cup holders! So I could add a little bit of snack at a time and it wouldn't spill since it went straight into cup holder! I could also throw peanut butter for sliced apples at the bottom and then have a lid for it!! Also we had some night time travel and glow sticks were a huge hit!!!

  13. I already subscribe to their newsletter, BUT I did just "Like" them on FB and mentioned how much I LOVE their site!! ;)

  14. Humm, nice and cute, I like it, Are you made it?

  15. Do you have any clue what a good snack would be for a teenager going on a 10 hour road trip with friends?(:

  16. Great idea to use that compartment box for treats!

  17. Thats not even real food ! Sugar high kids not a good idea on a road trip
